Madeira - Pico Ruivo

Here are some of my Madeira images from two glorious trips at sunset and sunrise. I always try and go to a few great areas at a location more than once. It takes a while to get a feel for an area and I really think that going for that 3rd visit at sunrise helped me capture the essence of this stunning mountain.

Sunset

Taken about 1 hour before sunset when the clouds were moving really fast. I used a 6 stop Kase ND filter to capture this shot.

THE PASSAGE OF TIME | SUNSET

The light was amazing in this image and the mist was catching the last of the golden rays.

DYING EMBERS | SUNSET

In this shot the mist was receding quickly so I opted for a faster shutter speed to Catch the last light. I love how the silver branches catch then golden glow.

BLUE HOUR OVER PICO AREEIRO

This was taken on the way down to the car. The high cloud came in really quickly and unfortunately I wasn’t able to capture any astro shots but this made up for it.

Sunrise

VENUS SETTING

Taken about 40 mins before sunrise. It was very dark and this image was a stack of 2 exposures. This was also only possible as it was a new moon.

A PASSAGE OF TIME | SUNRISE

This is my favourite of the series of images I shot of this tree. It shows that perseverance pays off.

GOLDEN VAIL

I liked how the tree fitted perfectly into the cloud as it formed behind it as the sun rose and warmed the air.

SHADOWS AND SILHOUETTES

These dead trees and so photogenic. These trees proved to be a perfect grouping and I liked the simple nature of the composition.

GOLDEN MADEIRAN BLANKET

A long exposure of the beautiful mist as it fell over the mountain top.

STANDING PROUD

The same tree from a different angle. I love the colour combination on this. The wet branches provided a very different look in the morning than a few evenings earlier when the branches were a silver white.

I was ready to pack up as I felt I had got the image I wanted from this composition. Then this bird landed for a few seconds and I managed to grab this shot. Again one of my favourites from a beautiful morning.
