Incredible morning photographing heather in Peak District

Some mornings are just super special and this Friday morning was one of those. It looked like there would be a chance of fog as it had rained heavily the day before and cleared overnight. The wind has dropped and everything was set. But I have had this all too often in the past and arrived excited only for the fog not to materialise.

So I had my Z8 and 24-120mm lens (my favourite lens for woodland which I knew I would be focusing on if it was foggy) and set off hoping for the best.

The next 4 hours were incredible. I got the best conditions and the fog stuck around whilst the sun slowly peeked through as the morning progressed. The following images were taken as I wandered around Surprise View and Padley Gorge saying ‘it doesn’t get better than this’ many many many times!

When I got home and started looking through my images I thought to myself how close I was to not going out that morning. I had given myself lots of excuses not to go… my back may hurt too much?, will it be foggy?, will the heather be at peak? But really I was just wanting reasons not to get up at 4:20am again. It never gets easy! But as I always say, “You never remember that extra hour in bed but always remember the extra hour in nature)

This is a composition that I hadn’t found in many visits to this location. It was where I shot ‘Enchanted Oaks’.

New version of Enchanted Oaks - this was taken about 2 hrs after Sunrise compared to the original version that was taken 40mins before sunrise.  You can see the difference in colour.  Which do you like the most - let me know in the comments below...

It was also a lot foggier in this image.  I think I prefer the original as the separation of the elements is better.

I love the green tones in this images and was surprised at how ‘green’ the ferns were at this time of year. I also like how there is just a little bit of Heather to place the season.

“Found the information to be most helpful. Made me aware of aspects of composition that I tended to overlook e.g. creating balance in an image or simplifying the composition by excluding superfluous content. Well worth the time and money” Ralph J
